The long awaited return of Yuriorkis “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” Gamboa is finally going to materialize on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the MGM Grand and Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada.  Gamboa will be facing Michael “Hammer Fist” Farenas for the interim WBA Super Featherweight World Title.  Gamboa whom comes to us from Guantanamo, Cuba and now fighting out of Miami, Florida has an impressive record of 21-0, (16 KO’s).  Gamboa defected from the Cuban National Team in December 2006, he did so with two other boxers, Yan Barthelemy and Odlanier Solis, while in Venezuela.  All three fighters escaped to Columbia, then moved wasting no time to Miami, Florida and were all signed as professionals under contracts with German-based Arena Box Promotion.  Yuriorkis never looked back and continued his ciclon of a career with Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions.

Gamboa is an orthodox fighter with a prodigious amateur background of 250 bouts, and doesn’t partake in much bark but in fact inhabits a very savage bite, he is yet to taste defeat in his professional venture.

Michael Farenas, fights out of Paranaque City, Philippines and at age 28, this southpaw has a record of 33-3-4, (26 KO’s).   Farenas is 0-0-1 in world title fights, he had a draw with Takashi Uchiyama, whom fights out of Tokyo, Japan bearing the record of 18-0-1, (15 KO’s).What makes this a good match up is the fact that Farenas is now fighting Gamboa in a match that entails quite that of a spider web due to the fact that Farenas drew with Uchiyama, whom beat Jorge Solis who was destroyed by Gamboa, hence the boxing web is spun.

This well matched attraction will be held on the undercard of the 4th installment of Pacquiao/Marquez.  At this particular time the WBA Super Featherweight Champion is Takashi Uchiyama, as stated earlier Farenas fought him to a draw last July.  A halt to the bout was due to an unintentional clash of heads in round three which resulted in a large laceration on the head of Uchiyama, in which the flow of blood couldn’t be stopped.

Michael Farenas is now the protégé and under the tutelage of former two time, two division world champion, Filipino great Jerry Penalosa. Farenas is now ranked 8th in the world yet Yuriorkis Gamboa is placed at #2.

Farenas has defeated 7 of his last 8 opponents, with notable wins over Fernando Beltran and also Daniel Attah. Yuriorkis on the other hand has been in court more than the ring for the majority of the prior year. Disputing over negotiation problems and contractual differences with Bob Arum and Top Rank Promotions, thus Gamboa will fight exclusively under rapper and entrepreneur 50 Cent on his SMS Promotions, which has recently been granted a license in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Previous to the in court feud with Arum, Yuriorkis had one of his most impressive victories to date against Daniel Ponce De Leon whom was deemed the WBC Featherweight Champion. Gamboa won in dominant fashion via an 8th round technical decision. Gamboa whom is highly regarded as a knockout king also conquered the likes of Orlando Salido, Jonathan Barros, and Jorge Solis all of which are supplementary to just the normal notch on Gamboa’s belt, but above average fighters.

In my opinion, I relatively believe that Gamboa will begin with his snapping jab, landing and scoring at will. While at the same time utilizing faints with a combination of the jab for the most part to bait Farenas into throwing wild shots for the reason that in prior occasions Farenas leaves himself wide open. In Gamboa`s last bout versus Ponce De Leon ,Gamboa did an exceptional job in countering all that Ponce De Leon threw with crisp right hands therefore nullifying Ponce De Leon`s most utilized weapons . I think the same will happen against Farenas. Farenas does happen to have cannons for hands with plenty of power.

To launch them, never the less he also has a vice that will ultimately play right into Gamboa`s favor. Michael Farenas lunges when he throws his combinations. Even though his fire power is always prevalent Gamboa possesses crafty footwork, moves very well, and has the knowledge that Farenas tends to be quite raw in addition, when he lands he usually hurts his adversaries.

Therefore I heavily doubt Gamboa will trade unless this contest voyages into the later rounds where the layoff and lack of gas in the tank might be the cause. I find that notion nonsensical given that the “Ciclon de Guantanamo” has trained as grueling for this fight than any other to prove to his skeptics there`s no room for ring rust on this Cuban.

Yes, Gamboa has been down a few times coupled with the layoff, so in all fairness there may possibly be a knock down, yet I don’t imagine that problem to be a factor as Farenas accuracy is reasonably problematic. I envision Gamboa with a dictating triumph via stoppage transpiring in the 10th round.

This is definitely a fight card worthy of watching, whether you’re just a Pacquiao or Marquez fanatic or an avid boxing aficionado, this ought to be a co-main event attraction with short fused explosions. Let us just hope it doesn`t top the main event itself, or maybe that wouldn`t be such a bad thing, not to mention that it wouldn`t be the first time an under card bout stole the show.
