Before Juan Diaz retired he looked like a shell of his former self. Things seemed to go downhill once he faced Nate Campbell. Following the Campbell fight he had 2 wins and 4 loses. After he lost a lopsided decision to Juan Manuel Marquez in 2010 he decided to retire from boxing.

Diaz stayed busy though. He had continued to go to law school, ran his own business, and is a full time father, but fighters never really stay retired. They make their way back to the sport one way or another and that’s what he did. Diaz came back and did an announcer gig on Showtime and did a really great job. Fans were thrilled to see him back, but that was just the beginning.

After some time had passed, Diaz announced his return to the ring. Diaz’ passion for the sport was reignited by his former foe, Juan Manuel Marquez’ one punch KO of Manny Pacquiao.

It was later announced that Diaz comeback opponent would be none other than the son of legendary Mexican fighter Pipino Cuevas, Pipino Cuevas Jr.

When fighters stay away from the game for as long as Diaz did, it is not that often that they come back at pretty much the same weight as when they last fought. Diaz weighed in at 135.5 pounds.

From the opening bell Diaz came out swinging like he always does but seemed to be rusty at times throughout the fight. In the 6th round Cuevas face was full of blood from all of the punishment that he absorbed over the course of the fight, and the fight was stopped giving Diaz the TKO victory.

Diaz has come back and seems rejuvenated. With a fight or two more, he should be back to his old fighting self, and only time and Diaz will tell for how much longer he will continue to fight.
