Roach: HBO Has To Make a Golovkin Fight Worth it For Cotto, Lara Does Nothing For Cotto

Amidst a tough decision loss, and a crowd of reporters, Roach let his displeasure known about how he felt Ruslan Provodnikov should have retained his belt on Saturday night instead of losing it to Chris Algieri via split decision. As he told the band of reporters that Algieri should not have a crack at Manny Pacquiao and instead should rematch Provodnikov in Vegas, the attention was then put back on the new Middleweight champion of the world, Miguel Cotto.

Just one week after his dominating performance against Sergio Martinez, the speculation of a Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez fight looms large. I asked Roach if Canelo was to lose, would they still consider him an opponent or move onto the winner in Lara. Roach stated, “Of course Canelo has to win so we can make the fight. I don’t think Lara brings enough to the table even if he does win. That fight does nothing for Miguel.”

Had Martinez defeated Cotto, the boxing world would have made a push for Martinez to fight Gennady Golovkin. Now that Cotto has the title, the demand doesn’t seem as high to see a Cotto-Golovkin showdown. Roach admits he’s never seen a Golovkin fight but he hears the talk of Golovkin and says HBO has to make it worth it for Cotto.

“I must say I never seen him (Golovkin) fight,” admits Roach. “I heard he punches like a mule and I’m sure my friend Peter Nelson of HBO would love to make that fight. But I don’t pick Miguels fight’s but I know if his team wanted that fight it has to be worth it in dollars. I know HBO wants that fight sort of passing the torch with Golovkin fighting in the Garden. I’ll watch him in July and we’ll see about that fight down the road.”
