Mayweather_KahnIt seems that Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) is finally getting tired of having the ‘Money’ carrot dangled in front of him and has given Floyd Mayweather Jr. (47-0, 26 KO’s) a five-day deadline in which the sport’s premium attraction must decide whether he wants to fight one of the UK’s finest.

Khan is fresh off one of the most impressive displays of his career in which he dominated the highly-rated Devon Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs) over twelve rounds in December. In an article posted on skysports.com Khan shares some the frustrations he has been feeling as a result of unsuccessfully pursuing the Mayweather fight.

“I’ve answered all the things Mayweather wanted me to do. He wanted me to fight at welterweight, I did that. He wanted to do a vote, I won the vote. He wanted me to beat a top guy in the division and I gave Devon Alexander a beating he’d never had before.”

Up to now Khan has been respectful in his requests to face the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport, but now he has shed the conservative approach and has started to attack Mayweather for avoiding the tougher fights in order to keep his undefeated record.

“There is a lot of money in a fight with me, not just in America, but he’s trying to avoid me. He’s avoiding two names in boxing, Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan. Mayweather wants to keep his ‘0.’ He doesn’t want to take the big fights. He’s not fighting the top guys but is fighting guys who are over the hill or not at their peak, he’s going to be undefeated.”

Khan has found it difficult to shake the glass-jaw stigma he has been stuck with after suffering some spectacular knockout losses, namely to Bredis Prescott in 2008 and Danny Garcia four years after. But one thing about Khan is that he has shown he will take risky fights, so he can feel justified in observing what he sees as Mayweather’s shortcomings in this area.

“One thing about me is I’ve fought guys at their peak and who have been dangerous. I didn’t have to fight them but I did. Losing doesn’t make you a bad fighter, losing shows how good you are if you come back from those losses.”

    I couldn’t agree more.

Khan wants the fight in May as over the summer he will be fasting in compliance with the rules of Ramadan and will be no where near peak condition during that time, hence his urgency. But his timing in making this bullish announcement may be misjudged. The rumor mill is churning out that the long-awaited fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao could finally be here. If that is true then Khan hasn’t got a snowball’s chance in hell of getting the match he desires, but ultimately it sounds as if he is just sick of the whole situation.

“It’s a waiting game, I’ve given his team five days. I need to know this week because I need to start training.”
