The old saying “the third time is a charm” seems to ring true in the case of a potential fight between Saul Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders.

The two were originally going to square off in May of 2020 but like everything that was going on in the world, Covid put a stop to that. Saunders also had his boxing license suspended after posting a controversial video online where he mocked domestic violence.

The second potential opportunity for the fight to happen came about for a September fight but Saunders was unable to go through with it due to a lack of preparation time. Saunders did eventually fight in 2020 against Martin Murray and won a decision.

Canelo had a lot happen in 2020. He got out of his contract with Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN and went on to beat the top guy in the 168-pound division, Callum Smith. Despite only fighting once it was a successful year for the Mexican superstar who proved his many doubters wrong and established himself as one of the greatest Mexican fighters ever.

Last week Canelo announced that he would be facing his mandatory Avni Yildirim. The reaction this received was mixed, to say the least, and there were those that felt Canelo was not staying true to his word on unifying the division. Those that felt that way were wrong…so wrong.

Earlier today (Jan. 28th) it was announced that Canelo and Saunders had agreed to terms for a unification bout in May.  The exact date and location have yet to be determined.
