Now that Miguel Cotto has missed out on the marquee names in his weight division, it seems he has narrowed down his focus to a handful of fighters. Cotto’s possible prom dates are coming more and more into focus every day. After missing out on mega-fights with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather, the list has been whittled down to five.
ESPN Deportes is reporting that the following names are in the mix for a fight with Cotto: Erislandy Lara, Timothy Bradley, Brandon Rios, Amir Khan and Cornelius Bundrage.
Although Timothy Bradley’s name has been the one that has been gaining some steam over the past couple of days, there is now a sense that it may very well be Bundrage and his 154-pound IBF title that gains Cotto’s affections. As of right now, Cotto’s lawyer, Gabriel Peñagarícano is unwilling to confirm or deny any rumors but he expects to make an announcement soon.
“No nothing is set in stone, although we are specifically working on Miguel’s next fight… I’d rather keep it confidential,[potential opponents]but there are several names in the mix, we will announce it soon. Possibly by the end a February or a few days afterward.” he told ESPN Deportes.
I’m sure Cotto’s camp already knows who they want to fight. I assume that they are just waiting for the Mayweather-Pacquiao stuff to calm down a bit so they can maximize their press. As it stands, a Miguel Cotto fight announcement would most definitely get lost in the shuffle but if he really does want to fight in the beginning of June, he will have to make an announcement soon. His lawyer seems to be backing up that logic so we can expect to hear something significant within the next week or so.
