Saul-Alvarez-and-Oscar-De-La-HoyaThe war for May 2nd is on apparently. Days after Floyd Mayweather declared the date for a fight with Manny Pacquiao. It seems that the Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya may have other plans.

“Canelo will be fighting May 2nd,” De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes at the WBC Convention. “The date doesn’t belong to anybody but it will be Canelo’s. Canelo is Mexican and just like Julio Cesar Chavez started the trend of a Mexican fighting on May 2nd, we’ll start with Canelo for Mexican families to get together and watch a Mexican box on May 2nd.”

De La Hoya said that the negotiations with Cotto are going well and he hopes to have it in a location where you can fit the most people as he feels everyone who wants to be there should be there.

“The good thing is negotations are still ongoing, that’s important. I feel that this is the most important fight in boxing especially for ‘Cinco De Mayo’ weekend. But we do have a Plan B and C but Plan A is definitely Canelo-Cotto.”

While there’s been much talk about this fight not being close or being far, De La Hoya is hopeful they can close out a deal before 2015.

“The plan is to have a deal in place and agreed upon before the end of the year. I want to put it in an arena that can hold 100,000 and I hope we can get it down,” explained De La Hoya.

So what about Mayweather-Pacquiao and why is that not Plan A for May 2nd?

“As I said before, I’ll believe the fight happens when they both are in the ring and the bell rings.”
