Dereck Chisora: A Man Who Is Finally Maturing?

Dereck Chisora last night showed a side of himself that we have never seen before. Chisora showed real emotion as he entered the ring but was still able to compose himself and produce a very confident and assured performance. Chisora was clearly emotional as he entered the ring as he was thinking of the death of the much loved Dean Powell. Powell has helped Chisora throughout his career so far and had even been discussing tactics with Chisora days before he died.

I initially began to worry if Chisora would be able to compose himself and be able concentrate on the matter in hand. He proved that he has what it takes mentally now. A big question mark has always been hanging over Chisora’s mentality with countless controversial incidents in his career.

Chisora seems to have wised up and seems fully focused on boxing. He came into the fight in great shape. He weighed in at a record low of 16st 11. He looked as if he had really put the work in and as though he now realizes the importance of being in good condition.

Chisora really seized his opportunity to win a European Title and out on a comprehensive performance. Chisora put his German opponent Edmund Gerber under immediate pressure letting his hands go up close. He landed several good upper-cuts and a lot of top quality left hooks. Chisora was landing good combinations and cut Gerber eye in the 3rd round. He was looking in complete control and as though he is a really improved boxer.

He constantly looked to come forward and really gave Gerber no let-up in pressure. Gerber did have a moment of success when he appeared to hurt Chisora in the 4th with a straight right. A seemingly smarter Chisora decided to get his head clear and avoid any further incident in the round. He didn’t engage with Gerber until he was back to normal. This was a great move by Chisora and one that I am happy to say surprised me.

Chisora began to land well to the body and was in complete control. He upped the tempo in the 5th and really began to force Gerber back to the ropes. He started landing big shots and with very little coming back the ref stepped in to save Gerber any further damage. For me it was a good decision by the ref because Chisora was landing some really good shots and nothing was coming back. It was a very determined and mature performance from Chisora and shows a man who has finally switched on and is improving.

He is reaping the benefits of facing the likes of Fury, Vitali and Haye already in his career and is a much better boxer for those fights. Yes his record isn’t the most impressive now standing at 18 wins and 4 losses but he has been in with some of the best out there and for me looks set for another world title shot before too long.

I was really impressed by Chisora in this fight and would love to see him face fellow Brit Tyson Fury again. When they thought last time both fighters were is less than satisfactory condition and did themselves no favors.

Chisora’s promoter Frank Warren spoke after the fight suggesting that he would love to put Chisora back in with Fury in December. At the moment there is all still confusion as to what’s next for Fury following the cancellation of his fight with Haye. If he isn’t to face Haye then I see no reason why a fight with Chisora shouldn’t be arranged.

If not than other possible opponents are the unbeaten American prospect Deontay Wilder or possibly even Tomasz Adamek. Either of these fighters would be real tests for Chisora and a victory would really put him up there in the heavyweight rankings.
