In 2015 Edith Soledad Matthysse had the biggest win of her career when she won the WBC and WBA Featherweight World Title’s from Jelena Mrdjenovich. The fight took place in Matthysse’s home country of Argentina which gave her an advantage but nevertheless she got a key victory and two world titles.
Seven months later Matthysse went to Edmonton to face Mrdjenovich in a rematch in Mrdjenovich’s hometown. This time around Mrdjenovich had not only the advantage of the judges but she had a knockdown and scored the more damaging blows in the fight. The right fighter won the rematch and a third fight between the two never happened.
The loss to Mrdjenovich was the biggening of a bumpy road for Matthysse as she lost her next two fights which was then followed by two victories and then a shot at a world title against Ewa Brodnicka.
Matthysse lost a split decision to Brodnicka in the champions home country of Poland and had not fought since.
Fast forward to 2021 and Matthysse has another fight lined up for a world title against Hyun Mi Choi of South Korea (formerly North Korea).
Choi’s last fight took place in December of 2020 and it was her only fight outside of South Korea. Choi holds the WBA Super Featherweight Title and has been undefeated since 2009 in which she suffered a draw in her second pro bout.
The fight is scheduled to take place in South Korea on August 28th.
