It has been evident that the president of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya has had the agenda of making the best fights possible, but the boxing public has been disappointed in the number of mismatches, and the potential great match-ups that never came into fruition in the year 2014. De La Hoya is fully aware of this situation, but always had his hands tied behind his back because he needed to get Al Haymon’s approval in order to make the bouts the public desired.
Now some breaking news has recently transpired that may immediately affect the boxing landscape. According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole, Golden Boy Promotions has settled its lawsuit with Richard Schaefer, thus surrendering its promotional rights to a number of top fighters who are also signed to Al Haymon. Yahoo Sports claimed they were aware of this situation when a source they were familiar with informed them.
What this signifies is the fact Golden Boy Promotions will lose some talented fighters under their stable. Yahoo Sports claimed they will lose Adrien Broner and Danny Garcia but retain Amir Khan, Lucas Matthysse, and Leo Santa Cruz. The details of this situation are yet to be completely clarified, partly due to the fact Oscar De La Hoya was unavailable to comment on the matter, and Schaefer’s attorney advised him not to speak on this ordeal.
With this lawsuit transpiring, Schaefer may be able to join Mayweather Promotions, as Leonard Ellerbe has been rumored to be relieved of his duties as the CEO of the company. This would mean Schaefer, Mayweather, and Haymon would work together once again, as it’s been known that they’ve all developed a pretty good relationship among one another.
Haymon currently has a reputation of not being willing to work with Top Rank, or other promotional companies such as Roc Nation Sports which has really stifled the cooperation these companies need in order to bring boxing to the forefront. Haymon has recently received major criticism from the boxing community and rightfully so, but perhaps the reinsertion of Schaefer can equate to a successful year similar to that of 2013, but maybe not. People will just have to tune in and see what the year 2015 has to offer.
