Golovkin “My focus will be on Miguel Cotto after this fight.”

Golovkin-CottoGennady Golovkin’s next date and opponent have been announced. Golovkin will take on Willie Monroe Jr. on May 16th in Los Angeles at The Forum on HBO. His opponent is Willie Monroe Jr. Monroe Jr. at this time last year was involved in the Middleweight Boxcino tournament. He made a name for himself winning that tournament and also then going to defeat Bryan Vera this year. He has stepped up where others have decided not to, to get in the ring with Golovkin.

Golovkin was a guest on Nacion ESPN where he explained why he can’t take Monroe Jr. lightly.

“We chose Monroe because he is young and is a very interesting fighter,” Golovkin said on the show. “He’s a good mover and he isn’t scared to fight. It will bring a new challenge to me.”

Golovkin commends Monroe on taking he fight and feels his resume warrants a fight with him.

“If you look at his last fight, it was a good fight,” explained Golovkin. It’s going to be a good fight for me because he’s a mover and a lefty; I think it will be a good test for me.”

Golovkin remains active while waiting for the big names to get in the ring with him, mainly one Miguel Cotto. Cotto holds the WBC Middleweight title and the lineal title in the division as well. After this bout, Golovkin says his focus is Miguel Cotto.

“My work is in the ring and in my training camp,” explained Golovkin. “A fight with Cotto, well that’s a good question for the promoters. I think Miguel understands my situations. He knows I want to fight him. My focus will be on Miguel Cotto after this fight.”

And as far as Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Golovkin said, “Yes, those fights are interesting but I’m a champion, and I want to unify the titles in my division.”
