Throughout the Mayweather-Pacquaio negotiations, both parties have taken blame from the general public for their inability to come to an agreement, but the distribution of blame has been widely skewed towards Mayweather’s camp.
A reason not often discussed why much of the blame has gone towards Mayweather’s team is due to his manager’s unwillingness to do interviews. It is universally recognized that Al Haymon (Mayweather’s manager) and Top Rank have an ongoing feud, which has not only prevented the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout from coming into fruition, but other great potential matchups as well.
Since Bob Arum is willing to do interviews and his adversary is not, the media presents Arum’s side of the story the majority of the times, which conveys a perception to the general public whose at fault. The reason why this occurs is due to the fact media outlets rely on quotes and interviews to be able to continuously present information to the public. Because Top Rank, and not Haymon is the one speaking to journalists, their message is delivered far more often throughout the boxing landscape.
If Haymon was willing to conduct interviews, the message he can be relaying is, Top Rank is reluctant to sit down and have serious negotiations. This video would certainly back this claim, and the blame might become more evenly distributed between the two camps.
Tha Boxing Voice recently caught up with Paulie Malignaggi to share his opinions on these ongoing negotiations. Malignaggi stated, “I hate to see the blame go one way. There’s two sides to the negotiations and that’s what you have to keep in mind.”What Malignaggi said is in fact true. In order for the bout to occur, both parties will have to sit down and negotiate until they can finally come to an agreement to make the biggest fight in boxing finally happen.
