London (22 August) Undefeated super bantamweight champions Kid Galahad and Jazza Dickens have been nominated for the prestigious Boxing Writers’ Club Young Boxer of the Year Award.

Ahead of their British title blockbuster at the Magna Centre, Rotherham, Galahad and Dickens now have the added incentive of possibly putting their names alongside the best fighters Britain has produced, when they collide on September 14th, live on Channel 5 from 8pm.

Previous winners of the accolade include Ricky Hatton, Joe Calzaghe, Naseem Hamed, Nigel Benn, Frank Bruno and John Conteh, who all received the honour before going on to become world champions and now Galahad and Dickens could be about to walk the same path.

“It’s a great honour to be nominated by the boxing writers for the Young Boxer of the Year Award,” Galahad said.

“To be able to put my name alongside the best Britain has produced is what I’m aiming to do and I’m going to show it in the Dickens fight.”

The 23-year-old undefeated WBC International champion, Galahad, who boxes out of the famous Brendan Ingle gym is already drawing comparison to former Ingle fighter Naseem Hamed and is confident he will come out on top in Rotherham.

“I’m glad I’m fighting an unbeaten and highly thought of fighter for the vacant British title, as I want to win it in style,” Galahad said.

However 22-year-old Dickens will certainly not make it an easy night for Kid.

Similarly holding a flawless professional record, boasting 16 wins with five knockouts, Dickens is the English champion, picking up the belt with a 10-round unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Jon Fernandes in Liverpool, in his 14th contest.

Having already taken an undefeated record, Jazza will be out to do the same to Galahad and put his name up there amongst the best.

“The nominations for both these young and highly talented fighters solidifies what a fantastic contest we are all in store for on September 14th,” Mick Hennessy said.

The winner of the Boxing Writers’ Club Young Boxer of the Year Award will be presented with the Geoffrey Simpson Award at their Annual Dinner at the Savoy Hotel in London in October.
