Diego MagdalenoThe TruTV Boxing Series has delivered some exciting matchups since its start on May 1. So far the series has delivered an upset of Mikael Zewski and Glen Tapia, an even back and forth fight between Antonio Orozco and Emmanuel Taylor, and a Ray Beltran rout of Takahiro Ao.

On June 26, it will deliver another excellent matchup in the lightweight division between Diego Magdaleno and Jose ‘Chelo’ Gonzalez, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com.

The fight will open Top Rank’s “MetroPCS Friday Night Knockout” card on TruTV (10 p.m. ET) at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. The card is headlined by the previously announced fight between super middleweight contender Gilberto Ramirez (31-0, 24 KOs) and Derek Edwards (27-4-1, 14 KOs).

“Stylewise, Magdaleno and Gonzalez is an excellent matchup, with Chelo being a big, strong aggressor and Magdaleno being a good boxer and counterpuncher,” Moretti told ESPN.com. “I think the winner clearly elevates himself to world title contention and his stock will rise among television people.”

Magdaleno (27-1, 11 KOs) lost his one title bid when he lost to Roman Martinez in Macau, China. That bout took place in the Jr. Lightweight division in April of 2014. Since then, Magdaleno has moved up in weight and has won 4 bouts in a row.

Gonzalez (24-1, 19 KOs) for his part lost his title bid against Ricky Burns when he traveled to Scotland last May. In that fight, Gonzalez seemed to be ahead for most of the bout but retired due to a hand injury. If he would have continued, it seemed that he would have been crowned a world champion. Since then he has won two bouts in a row.

The winner of the bout could be in line for a title shot as Moretti has hinted that one of the sanctioning bodies as a title eliminator.
