It had been rumored for the last few weeks, and ever since the failed attempt at landing a fight with Nonito Donaire, that Abner Mares would move up to 126lbs with the strong possibility of facing Daniel Ponce De Leon. Well the fight has been finalized and the two will fight at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
Both Mares and his manager Frank Espinoza tweeted that the fight was official for April 20th on Showtime. Mares, who pushed to make a fight with Nonito Donaire, vacated his 122 lb title and has moved up to 126 lbs.
Mares will be competing for Ponce De Leon’s WBC featherweight title, the first defense since Ponce De Leon won it back in September of last year against Jhonny Gonzalez.
The co-feature will is close to being completed and will feature a couple of welterweight sluggers in Marcos Maidana and Josesito Lopez. If this fight is finalized, April 20th will be a solid night of boxing on Showtime.
