a8Californian junior welterweight Mauricio Herrera doesn’t know who he’s fighting next, but he does know when he’ll be fighting. In a recent interview with Thaboxingvoice.com, Herrera said that he has gotten word that he will once again be on the undercard of Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, rumored to be fighting Joshua Clottey on December 6th.

“Right now we just got word today that they’re going to put me on the Canelo card, I think December 6th. They’re still working on the whole card so they haven’t given me any names of opponents or who I’m going to fight. I’m going to star training next week and find out who’s next,” Herrera told Thaboxingvoice.com.

Herrera (21-4, 7KOs) last fought on the Canelo-Lara PPV undercard back on July 12th, defeating Johan Perez by 12th round majority decision to claim the interim WBA World junior welterweight title.

It was a solid performance for Herrera, who gave Danny Garcia all sorts of fits back in March of this year and has built a reputation for ruining his opponents’ plans. Herrera is not afraid to brawl when he is matched with the kind of fighter willing to exchange. There are plenty of interesting matchups that can be made for Herrera and his last outing is likely the reason he’s landed the coveted role on Canelo’s undercard.

“They liked me on that card and they want me to go back on his card again. They were happy with my performance.”

There hasn’t been any official word on Canelo’s next fight, other than Oscar De La Hoya announcing he’d fight December 6th, and that is mostly because the site is still being figured out. Canelo has stated that he’d like to fight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, but there are previously booked events that conflict with the venue. Canelo may fight in Los Angeles if things cannot be worked out with San Antonio officials.

While Clottey appears to be the leading candidate, there is also an issue determining which network will broadcast the fight. Regardless, Canelo will be fighting on regular HBO or Showtime, depending on who Golden Boy goes with.
