Miguel-Cotto-and-Freddie-Roach-1_d8219When news broke out that Floyd Mayweather would be vacating all his titles after defeating Manny Pacquiao last Saturday in Las Vegas, many wondered why? Is it because Mayweather will introduce the first PBC belt into the foray of boxing? Or is it because he wants to make history by adding the lineal Middleweight title to his championship case?

Miguel Cotto holds the title as of now, and he has a fight coming up with Daniel Geale on June 6th. Should he be victorious a September date with Mayweather is not out of the question, especially since there were talks of doing a rematch between the two in May.

Cotto’s advisor Gabriel Peñagarícano told El Vocero in an article on Boxingscene.com that a fight between Mayweather and Cotto would be a big event.

“Miguel is focused on his fight on June 6. After June 6 we will see what the biggest fight that is available is,” Peñagarícano stated in the article. “I have no doubt that [a Mayweather rematch] would be a mega fight. It would generate a lot of interest, and it would be one of the fights that we would want. But as I said, it’s nothing that we are looking at now. We have a commitment on June 6, and we are not looking there now.”

Cotto’s fight is on HBO, and the rumor in the industry is that if Cotto beats Geale, he has to fight Canelo Alvarez in the fall as part of the contract for his fight being on HBO. Of course, Canelo has to beat James Kirkland this Saturday for that to happen as well. Mayweather has stated his last fight would be in September so the possibility of a Mayweather-Cotto rematch might be out the question unless it happens next year. But Mayweather’s advisor Al Haymon and Miguel Cotto’s new promoter Jay-Z of Roc Nation Sports have a bad history, so who knows if a fight like that is even possible anyway.
