The “Golden Boy” himself Oscar De La Hoya had some great things to say to FightHype about Golden Boy Promotions’ Cinco De Mayo clash. Between former junior middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez and hard punching James Kirkland. When asked about what he expects, the first word out of his mouth was “fireworks”.
De La Hoya went on, “Fireworks… a great fight, action packed, your money’s worth. These are the types of fights that we wanna see.”
After the news broke that James Kirkland would not have proven trainer Ann Wolfe in his corner for the first time since his only defeat. There are those in the boxing world that remain skeptical of Kirkland’s chances, but De La Hoya has different ideas.
“Look, Kirkland is a beast… he just keeps coming forward, I mean look at what he did to Angulo out in Cancun… It’s an entertaining fight… It’s gonna be one of those fights where we are possibly gonna be talking about it for a very long time.”
Between the drama that always seems to accompany a James Kirkland fight, a great style match-up and the star power of Canelo, Oscar isn’t just spouting hype. The build up and fight itself should provide plenty to talk about over the next few months.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and James “Mandingo” Kirkland meet in San Antonio on May 2nd, and the broadcast will be live on HBO.
