miguel-cotto-next-fightMiguel Cotto is slated for a return date in June, meaning Cotto would have one the Middleweight title of the world and not had a fight since he won that title last June with corner man Freddie Roach. Cotto was rumored to have a clash with Canelo Alvarez that never came to light. Many feel Cotto was waiting for a possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather instead agreed to fight Manny Pacquiao.

The names on Cotto’s potential list of opponents don’t jump out at you either. Tim Bradley, Brandon Rios, and Cornelius Bundrage aren’t exactly Middleweights either. So like us, Roach just wants to have Cotto active in the ring.

“With Cotto, I can’t wait for him to get a fight,” said Roach. “It’s been a long time. I feel a little bad; he’s one of best in world today! I can’t wait to get into the gym with Miguel after the Mayweather fight. It’s a great relationship, and he’s not done yet!”

The name that many people want to see Cotto in the ring with aside from Canelo Alvarez is Gennady Golovkin. Roach thinks his man has what it takes to beat one of the most feared boxers in the sport.

“I pick Miguel 100 percent to win that fight against Golovkin but I’m not part of negotiations of who he chooses. I do feel it’s a winnable fight. Gennady’s last fight, there were like 900 people there. It wasn’t that good a show; it was mediocre. Murray tried a little bit, but I thought Golovkin should have ended it earlier.”

When Tha Boxing Voice interviews Roach last July, Roach said he had never seen any footage on Golovkin. Since then, Roach says, ““He’s a good, young prospect but the caliber of guys he’s fighting right now, it’s a small pool, not that deep. I’d love to get Cotto ready for Golovkin. He is a good ring general, does do some very good things, but he’s not perfect. Nobody is perfect.”
