WBO president Francisco Valcarcel faced a lot of criticism after he said that Roman “Rocky” Martinez had to face his Mikey Garcia who became his mandatory challenger after Garcia lost his title on the scale and KO’d Juan Manuel Lopez. It was not completely necessary to demand that Martinez face Garcia because the fight was already being negotiated.

The fight itself hit a snag and the main cause was the amount of money Martinez was to receive for defending his title.
“It’s not fair,” said Martinez. “It is a fight that I like but in reality I faced Burgos. I went to China to face Magdaleno and I think that Valcarcel was wrong (in what he said). This week we may find out whether or not I am going to fight with Garcia. If they give a better offer then I think we can reach an agreement.”

Martinez has even stated that if he wants to he will not hesitate to vacate his title and chase a bigger purse to fight the 130 pound IBF champion.

“Anything can happen. If we do not reach an agreement and Argenis team makes a better offer then I would be willing to fight. I am willing to fight anyone. I was the champion. I am the champion and I fight for what is right. I fight for what is right and if they pay me justly I will fight anybody.”

Martinez knew that after Garcia knocked out Lopez that fans would call for a fight between him and Garcia but at 130 pounds Martinez feels he has the advantage over Garcia.

“I do not compare myself to Juan Manuel Lopez or anyone else. Everyone has different styles but I think that 130 is my weight and Garcia would have to move up and the difference is that I am an experienced fighter at this weight and I move forward. If he wants to beat me he will have to knock me out.”
