New York, NY / San Antonio, TX (8/29/13) – While most of the US will be celebrating the end of summer with a long, relaxing Labor Day holiday weekend, middleweight kingpin and top pound-for-pounder Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez will be spending a busy weekend in San Antonio, TX. The middleweight champ will be taking part in the “People en Español” Festival with HBO Latino, and later stopping by Sidney Lanier High School to speak about his anti-bullying campaign.

Martinez is excited and honored to be a part of the festival and having the opportunity to once again speak to youths about the severity of bullying. Martinez’ stance against bullying has been well documented during his championship reign. Having been bullied as a child, it is something that Martinez holds very dear to his heart.

“I am delighted to continue my quest to speak out against bullying and hopefully I will be able to inspire those in attendance to realize that bullying is not something that should be tolerated or condoned,” said Martinez.

“The ‘People en Español’ Festival in San Antonio is a great opportunity for Sergio to reconnect with his fans,” said promoter Lou DiBella. “His body is getting stronger with time and therapy, and we look forward to the return of a strengthened Sergio Martinez in 2014. In the meantime, he will continue to meet with his fans and enjoy their company.”

“I am delighted to join Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez to these events this weekend,” said longtime advisor Sampson Lewkowicz.  “San Antonio has always been a great fight town and they truly appreciate the sport of boxing.  I am looking forward to meeting all of the fans that will be there in attendance.”

Nathan Lewkowicz, V.P. of Sampson Boxing, echoed similar statements regarding the upcoming weekend’s festivities.

“Sergio has always been super appreciative of the support from his fans and he is excited to meet them at the events this weekend in the great fight city of San Antonio.”

The WBC middleweight champion Martinez is currently rehabbing from injuries that he suffered in his most recent title defense over top middleweight contender Martin Murray this past April.  The bout, which took place in Martinez’ home country of Argentina in front of a crowd of more than 50,000 adoring Argentinean fans, was the seventh consecutive victory for the middleweight champ since upsetting then-reigning WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in 2010.

Martinez looks to be back in action sometime in early 2014.
