walters-11-10-2013-3In what was billed as a 50/50 fight on paper was anything but that tonight when WBA Super World Champion Nonito Donaire took on WBA World Champion Nicholas Walters.

The fight started out as a chess match with both men feeling each other out but Walters seemed to be the one controlling the distance with his jab and was backing Donaire up for most of the round.

The second round opened up in the same manner but Walters seemed to be even more effective in out boxing Donaire. It seemed as though Walters was in full control until at the closing seconds of the round Donaire landed one of his monster left hooks from hell that had Walters on very wobbly legs. If the bell didn’t sound it’s very possible that Walters may have been finished.

Donaire came out aggressively in the third but Walters was fully recovered and was able to handle the pressure. Walters went back to his boxing from the outside once again and was controlling the round. There were times when he would get close and one time when he did he was able to land a short right hand that sent Donaire to the canvass for the first time in his career.

Walters dominated the rest of the way and was hurting Donaire to the body as well as the head which really slowed him down.

The end came in the sixth when Walters sucked Donaire into a counter right hand to the side of the head sending down for the second time in the fight but this time he wasn’t able to recover and the referee waived off the fight.

While the future looks bright for Walters, it is unclear where Donaire goes from here. He may chose to move down in weight as indicated by his comments claiming that Walters size and power was just too much for him tonight.
