Craig McEwan believes his time in the famous Wild Card Gym in LA will be the difference in the Betfair Prizefighter Light Middleweights III at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday November 3, live on Sky Sports.

The Scotsman in back in Britain after seven years in the States training with Freddie Roach in the Hollywood gym that boasts the biggest names in boxing. The 30 year old has boxed twice in Scotland since returning and says that being the last man standing in the 27th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight man, one night tournaments will propel him into title contention.

“I want to fight for the British, Commonwealth and European titles and I obviously need to be over here to do it,” said McEwan.

“I wasn’t getting much time with Freddie in the Wild Card as he’s a very busy man, and I’ve got a young family now with two boys and they want to see their Granny and Grandpa, but for me, I’m over here to impress on big nights like this and get those title shots.”

McEwan turned over with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy promotions team after a successful amateur career, and boxed 21 times across the pond before returning to the UK.

Defeats to Andy Lee and Peter Quillin marred a fine run of wins in America, but McEwan has nothing but fond memories of his time with the boxing A-list in Tinseltown and believes the exposure to the greats of the sport could prove the difference in east London.

“I worked with the best in the business out there – Bernard Hopkins, Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright, Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley, rubbed shoulders in the gym with Manny Pacquaio and Amir Khan and one-on-one work with Freddie – just being involved in all that has been fantastic,” said McEwan.

“I’d love to go back to America, I was there for seven years and I’ve got some good friends out there. But the chance to be in Prizefighter presented itself so I’m here to see where it takes me. It’s great exposure on Sky Sports and gets your name out there.”

McEwan is joined in the line up fellow Scot Kris Carslaw, Birmingham’s Terry Carruthers, Middlesex man Ryan Toms, Banbury’s Peter Vaughan, Central Area champ Curtis Valentine and unbeaten pair Larry Ekundayo and Nav Mansouri.

There’s extra spice on the night as for the first time in Prizefighter, a stoppage win will net the victor a £2,000 bonus.

Tickets for Betfair Prizefighter Light Middleweights III are on sale now priced at £40 (unreserved), £60 (ringside) and £120 (VIP) and available from Matchroom Sport on 01277 359900 and at www.matchroomboxing.com
