It seems like Guillermo Rigondeaux may finally get his first significant fight since his win over Nonito Donaire. According to Ring TV, Oscar De La Hoya has stated that negotiations have begun to stage a fight between the 122 lb champion Rigondeaux and all action WBC 122 lb champion Leo Santa Cruz.
“Talks are underway. Hopefully, we can put together what would arguably be one of the best fights of the year with Leo Santa Cruz versus Guillermo Rigondeaux, so talks are underway,” said De La Hoya. “We’re in preliminary talks and they’ve started. That’s a fight that Leo has been asking for, and that’s a fight that Rigondeaux has been asking for, so that’s something that we want to deliver to the fans.”
Leo Santa Cruz (29-0-1, 17 knockouts) has said he would be willing to fight the Cuban southpaw. He has also backtracked and said he doesn’t bring enough to the table, and then saying he would fight him again. Coming off an 8th round TKO victory over Jesus Ruiz, Santa Cruz has heard the fans and their complaints of his opposition.
Rigondeaux(15-0, 10 KOs) who isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, has kept winning and in Japan this past December was in an action brawl as he stopped Hisashi Amagasa in the 11th round.
Now a possible fight between the two may happen in the summer.
“It would have to be after May, sometime in June or July. We haven’t thought of the site or where the fight would take place as of yet,” said De La Hoya. “That would be a perfect Las Vegas fight or I would love to take it to San Antonio or even here at the Staples Center [in Los Angeles.] That would be a great Staples Center fight.”
While Oscar De La Hoya Promotes Leo Santa Cruz, Al Haymon is his advisor. So we will have to wait and see how this plays out……
