Financially, A Fight With Saul Alvarez Benefits Miguel Cotto Most

Miguel Cotto is a fighter who has passed his prime but is looking to add that exclamation mark to end his career, whenever that may be. With the latest addition of Freddie Roach in his corner Cotto has appeared to return to his original style of fighting that made him the star that he became and in his last performance when he took out Delvin Rodriguez he had a point to prove and that point is “I am still here!”

Cotto has had a target on him for a long time and has fought many of today’s biggest stars including Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. That target has not gone away.

Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez has waited a long time and has practically pleaded for a fight with Cotto but little to no interest was shown by Cotto. On an episode of ESPN’s Golpe A Golpe Martinez had asked Cotto about a possible fight between the two and Cotto had mentioned that this is a business and the price has to be right. I.e., money is a major issue.

Another matchup that fans have wanted to see Cotto in is with Mexican superstar Saul Alvarez. Both fighters have a great body attack and one would expect to see one of the two go down from a shot to the liver. Recently, Cotto met up with Golden Boy Promotions to discuss a possible bout with Alvarez next year and it is said that Cotto was offered ten million dollars.

At this stage in his career a fight with Alvarez best suits Cotto financially which is what he wants and that is why a fight with Sergio Martinez never happened. Even though Martinez is one of the top middleweights in the world, he has declined. If they were ever to fight it should have happened a year or two ago. Should Cotto fight against Alvarez, it could be his last stand and what a promising one it would be. Win or lose he gets paid very well and could continue fighting for whatever purse comes up afterwards. Should he pass on the Alvarez fight and show even more signs of decline then the purse could shrink substantially. Bottom line, if it’s going to make dollars…it has to make sense.
