The legendary Sergio Martinez is easily still a top 10 boxer at 160 lbs, an amazing fighter when it comes to the sport that he has, in the past perfected. We have all been awaiting his return to the sport after his devastating loss to Miguel Cotto in June of 2014. Speculation is in the air as to whom Martinez would face if he convinces his team and his fans that his right knee has healed enough to sustain a match in the ring one more time.
Martinez is in Spain, undergoing treatment for his right knee near his home. His loss to Cotto followed a 14-month break and most had speculated that he had not fully recovered from injuries sustained during his match against Martin Murray in 2013. Sergio was left on crutches for 7 months following his victory against Murray. Unbeknownst to the 50,000 fans in attendance for his bout against Murray — Sergio’s right knee was re-injured just days prior to the match. On top of an ailing shoulder and injured knee, he fractured his hand in just the second round against Murray. Able to pull off a victory although some may have split views on who the winner actually was, this resilience truly showed that Sergio has the heart of a champion. A victory under those circumstances is truly a heroic feat.
Sergio Martinez’s promoter Lou DiBella is known for having taken a chance with Sergio back in 2007 when the fighter was 33 years old. Sergio and his promoter do not believe his career is over and as boxing enthusiasts wouldn’t it be amazing to see a bout between himself and Superstar Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin.
Golovkin, also boasts his latest win over Martin Murray and is set to fight Willie Monroe Jr. in May of this year. His undefeated professional boxing record, with 29 of his 32 victories by way of knock-out, awaits his opportunity to face the greats in the sport. A win over Monroe would be a solid opponent on his resume but still leaves boxing fans with the desire to see a superstar on his record.
Could a potential return for Sergio to the ring against Golovkin in late 2015 give GGG the name he has yet to face, and could Sergio once again capture lightning in a bottle and shock the world and hand The Kasack his first professional loss. If Sergio does return to the ring, many fans might be content to see him fight a lower level boxer, but “Maravilla” is a champion and he should be allowed to test the best if he so chooses!
