Matthew Macklin celebrates his knockout win against Joachim Alcine.

Many expected Matthew Macklin (29-4) to have a fairly easy fight against the decent but not great Joachim Alcine (33-3-1), but not as easy as it ended up being. Macklin needed less than three minutes of the opening round to stop the Canadian fighter.

Things immediately started going downhill as soon as Macklin dropped Alcine twice in the opening minutes with powerful right hooks. Alcine never quite recovered from this initial assault, leading Macklin to continue raining down blows on the wobbled fighter. With less than thirty seconds remaining in the round the referee was forced to stop the fight.

With this quick and brutal victory Macklin is poised to rematch Sergio Martinez or face champion Daniel Geale, who is fresh off his upset win against Felix Sturm. With this performance, Macklin has managed to keep himself relevant in a talent rich division.
