A media conference call to promote the Mayweather-Maidana fight quickly turned into Mayweather-Pacquiao as the new WBO’s welterweight last fight with Tim Bradley was brought up to Mayweather. Mayweather said that he did see the fight but was not impressed by either fighter.
“I did watch the fight. I haven’t seen a Pacquiao fight in years since Miguel Cotto. He was the better man as far as versus Tim Bradley. Bradley is lifting too many weights. He’s worried more about how he looks on the scales than in the ring. He was looking like an amateur, throwing looping shots and gassing out early. Both fighters looked like amateurs. I’ve seen something totally different in Pacquiao. Still, I cant say I’m going to fight him because he was with Bob Arum and I’m working with Golden Boy Promotions,” Mayweather stated.
Mayweather wasn’t short on an opinion as he also said that Pacquiao hasn’t looked the same since Pacquiao left Alex Ariza.
“There was an article on Fighthype where Freddie Roach basically said that he didn’t know what Alex Ariza was giving his fighter. I don’t see the same snap in his shots. I’m seeing something totally different from Pacquiao.”
Ariza will be in Maidana’s corner next week when Mayweather looks to become 46-0. Mayweather says he also see a different Maidana with Ariza in his corner.
“I noticed when Ariza was in Amir Khan’s corner, Khan was super strong against Maidana. When Maidana fought Alexander, he wasn’t as strong like in the Adrien Broner fight. I don’t know if Ariza plays a major role in that. I look at Pacquiao, ever since Ariza hasn’t been in his corner, Pacquiao hasn’t had the same power. I’m not saying anything bad about Ariza but I notice these things. We got USADA and we going to continue to do what we’re supposed to do,” explained Mayweather.
Almost like clockwork whenever Mayweather or Pacquiao fight, the other guy’s name always comes up near and around fight week. So it was almost fitting when Lance Pugmire of the LA Times reported that Oscar De La Hoya has had discussions with Bob Arum on a possible Manny Pacquiao-Canelo Alvarez fight down the road to end the cold war. As many people did when the initial report came out, Mayweather doesn’t believe the fight happens.
“I don’t think Pacquiao and Canelo are going to fight. But if that fight was to happen I would choose Canelo to win.”
