Shane Mosley - Ricardo MayorgaIn just a couple days “Sugar” Shane Mosley and Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga will face off in the main event of a highly-criticized pay-per-view but the outlook for the event looks pretty grim. Both fighters have had terrific careers, and their stars have shone bright, but that was years ago. As their age has increased their abilities have decreased, and their pulling power to bring fans into seats have decreased as much or even more. This rematch may be a last chance for glory for both fighters, but the interest of fans is not there.

Mosley and Mayorga held a press conference for their upcoming fight and during that press conference while the two fighters were about to face off, Mosley’s girlfriend bent over not once, but twice in front of Mayorga and then Mayorga proceeded to “smack” Mosley’s girlfriend’s backside causing Mosley to attack Mayorga. When all was said and done, both fighters made their way to the back and a model/ring card girl clapped.

The event itself seemed extremely fake and poorly acted out. It was clear that Mosley’s girlfriend blatantly put herself in that position and Mayorga seemed to be awaiting his cue, and he was not his normal energetic, trash-talking self with all the commotion going on.

After everything had settled down, Mayorga released a statement in which he admits that it was all put on and that he was approached by Mosley with the idea.

“Before I talk to the Nicaraguans, I want to make something clear,” said Mayorga.

“For me, a woman is like a trophy, like something sacred and beautiful. Don’t think that I’m rude (or chauvinistic) . Everything that I’ve said about Mosley’s girlfriend or his wife has been [because] they have asked me to sell the fight in the United States. I don’t need to sell the fight in Nicaragua because Nicaragua they don’t sell it.

Thanks to our president [Daniel Ortega], everyone in Nicaragua can watch it free. In reality, it was [Mosley’s girlfriend] and [Mosley] that asked me to do what I did and that he would push me. It was all for publicity. I am not a saint, but I’m not an asshole either. I respect men and women both.”

The attempt to boost interest in the fight worked for a bit, but the horrible acting, and the obviousness of it being scripted has put out what little spark that arose.
