On September 8th, IBF welterweight champion Randall “KO King” Bailey will put his title on the line against one of boxing’s brightest young stars in Devon Alexander ‘The Great”. The fight has been finalized and will take place in Memphis, Tennessee live on Showtime.
The last big boxing card to take place in Memphis was Mike Tyson vs. unified champ Lennox Lewis. It was confirmed yesterday by Alexander via text to me that the fight is on and headed to Memphis.
For months now, a war of twitter words has been waged between the two about whether the fight would be in Alexander’s hometown of St Louis, where the former Jr. Welterweight champion is a huge draw. Bailey thought he couldn’t get a fair shake in St Louis, where most fans and boxing writers thought Alexander has been the recipient of some generous decisions.
When I spoke to Devon yesterday via text, he was pretty excited that the fight has a destination although no venue has been named. Bailey could not be reached for comment but he got his wish to keep the fight out of the challenger’s hometown. He has been saying for months that he’s the champion and he’s not going to be treated like a challenger. Now that the fight is a go with Memphis as the location, the ‘KO King” will be back in the building looking to defend his crown, while Devon will be looking capture another title in another division.
